Thursday, February 8, 2007 was a milestone for the Northwave-sponsored Snowboard Outreach Society

Summit at Snoqualmie, WA - Thursday, February 8, 2007 was a milestone for the Northwave-sponsored Snowboard Outreach Society Learn to Ride Program at the Summit. Fifty-two students completed their requirements and graduated from the first of two sessions. The graduates learned how to snowboard and they developed personal skills for success through the SOS core values.

The Learn to Ride program helps SOS students build resiliency and protective factors in their lives. The students are mentored by community volunteers who teach the SOS core values of: courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom and compassion. The volunteers provide guidance and support to their youth throughout the session.

Each participant snowboards for five days with each day focusing on one of the SOS core values. The values are chosen to promote positive decision making for youth with risk factors in their lives.

The graduation ceremony is an appreciation event. The community volunteers and instructors provide positive feedback to each of their SOS students. They recognize each student's achievements during the session, and the students thank each of the volunteers.

"I cannot wait for the start of the next session," said Paul Martin, SOS Program Coordinator. "I had volunteers who were truly committed to youth development, and there were fifty-two participants dedicated to personal development. They made my job easy."

The second Learn to Ride session starts at the Summit on Thursday, February 15 and runs through March 22. Please contact SOS at 970.926.9292 or http://www.sosoutreach.org/ to get involved or donate today.
